RMG workers dead again by fire!!!

At least seven female workers died in stampede and of suffocation and 20 others were injured when a deadly fire broke out in a garment factory at Mohammadpur in the city on Saturday afternoon.
Workers and relatives alleged that some workers remained missing after the blaze and staged demonstrations in front of the factory in the evening.
Witnesses and fire fighters said that the deaths were caused by suffocation from smoke and stampede when the frightened workers scrambled to come out of the two-storied building of Smart Export Garment after the fire broke out.
The blaze occurred just two months after the country’s worst factory fire that killed 112 workers at Tazreen Fashions Ltd at Ashulia on the outskirts of Dhaka.
The latest fire coincided with a US congressional delegation’s visit to Dhaka mainly to see the compliance at the garment factories.
The workers alleged that one of the two exits was closed when the fire broke out and there was no emergency fire exit at the factory, housed on the upper floor of the two-storey building.
There are bakery factories on the ground floor of the building called Absar Khan Market at Mohammadpur.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said the factory was not approved by them.
Workers got panicked after the fire broke out and were trying to rush out but most of them were trapped inside as the gate was locked, said Minara Begum, a machine operator of the factory.
The fire originated from the cutting section and quickly engulfed the entire floor as rubber foam for manufacturing jackets were stacked up there, she said.
‘The factory employs some 360 workers and the number of casualties was not high as many were out for lunch when the fire broke out,’ said Minara, who managed to escape the blaze.
Fire Services deputy assistant director Abdul Halim said an electric short circuit might have caused the blaze. He said they had found no one trapped inside the factory when they entered there.
Azizul Haque, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur police station, said that the factory security officer Farid Alam told the police that he had seen the flames coming from the boiler of the factory. The boiler was repaired on Saturday,’ he added.
Fire Services director (operations) Mahbubur Rahman said that eight fire engines had struggled for two hours to control the blaze that broke out at around 2:30pm.
The deceased were Nasima, 30, from Borhanuddin of Bhola, Nasima, 17, of Borhanuddin Bhola, Kohinur Akhter, 16, a resident of Basila Garden City at Mohammadpur, Razia, 17, from Barisal and a resident of Mohammadpur, Fatema, 17, a resident of Rayerbazar, Laizu Akhter, 17, of Basila Road and Jyotsna, 20, from Borhanuddin of Bhola.
Of them Jyotsna and Liza died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and five others at ZH Sikder Women’s Medical College and Hospital.
Anjan Das, assistant professor of ZH Shikder Medical College said that the five workers had died of suffocation and in stampede.
The injured were taken to DMCH, ZH Sikder Women’s Medical College and Hospital and nearby clinics and hospitals.
The police said they brought the body of Laizu Akhter, 17, to the hospital in the evening from her house at Mohammadpur.
Disaster management ministry official Mohammad
Nurul Islam said relatives of each of the deceased and injured would be given Tk 20,000 and Tk 10,000, respectively, as compensation. He said the bodies would be handed over to the families without autopsy following requests from them.
BGMEA’s crisis management cell chief Khaled Mansur said the factory was not approved by them.
First vice-president of BGMEA Nasir Uddin Chowdhury said that the factory was not a member of the apex body of the readymade garment factories.
‘We will look into the matter seriously as it involves the interest of the industry.’
A four-member investigation team headed by deputy director of Fire Brigade (operation) has been constituted to find out the reasons behind the fire, Fire Brigade and Civil Defence director general Abu Naim Mohahammad Sahidullah said. The committee has been asked to submit the report in three-working days, he added.
Jahangir Kabir Nanak, state minister of local government rural development, Hassan Mahmood Khandkar, inspector general of police, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Yusuf Harun visited the scene.

At least seven female workers of a readymade garment factory in Mohammadpur's Beribadh area were killed in a stampede as a fire broke out there on Saturday, reports bdnews24.com.
Fire Services Director (Operations) Mahbubur Rahmand said the fire broke out in one 'Smart' factory at around 2pm and was controlled after about two hours.
The deaths were reportedly caused when they tried to rush to safety following the outbreak of fire.
DMCH police camp Sub-Inspector Mohammad Bacchu Mia said doctors declared Joshna dead after she, along with one of her fellow workers Liza, was taken there at around 3.30pm.
"Doctors at the Sikder Medical College declared five female workers of the factory dead after they were rushed there in a critical condition," Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Azizul Haque said.
The victims have been identified as Nasima Begum, 18, Nasima Akhter, 16, Kahinur Akhter, 16, Fatema Akhter, 17 and Nazia Akhter, 17.
Another four workers were undergoing treatment in the same hospital, Azizur added.
The police official said police brought the body of Laizu Akhter, 17, to the hospital in the evening from her residence at Mohammadpur.
The ill-fated worker was rushed to the local hospital by her family members where the doctors declared her dead.
Meanwhile, Disaster Management Ministry official Mohammad Nurul Islam said relatives of each of the deceased and injured in the incident would be given Tk 20,000 and Tk 10,000, respectively, as compensation. He said the bodies would be handed over to the relatives without any autopsy following requests from them.
Mamtaz Begum, one of the factory workers, who managed to escape safe, said she was working at the factory's Finishing Section when the fire erupted. "The fire might have originated from the Iron Section," she said.
She also said the factory had some 350 workers and added the number of causalities was 'less' as the fire broke out during launch time.
The OC said one of the factory's security officials Farid Alam told police that he saw the flames coming from the boiler of the factory.
"The boiler was repaired on Saturday," he added.
Meanwhile, BGMEA's Crisis Management Cell chief Khaled Mansur has said the factory was not approved by them.
State Minister for LGRD Jahangir Kabir Nanak and IGP Hasan Mahmud also visited the spot.
Workers and their relatives took to streets in the area around 6pm alleging some workers had been missing since the outbreak of the fire.
Fire Services Deputy Assistant Director Abdul Halim said the fire could have originated from an electrical short circuit. He claimed they found no one trapped inside the factory when they entered there.
Bangladesh is the second largest exporter of readymade garments after China, and clothes account for up to 80 percent of the country's $24-billion annual exports.
Despite such high returns from the readymade garments sector, safety of the workers has been overlooked and factory fire is not a new issue in the country. A recent devastating fire killed over 110 workers in Tazreen Fashions Ltd in the Ashulia industrial area.
In Dec 2010, at least 25 people were killed in a fire in the same industrial area. On Feb 2006, an incident of fire in the KTS Textiles and Garments had claimed 54 lives in Chittagong.

Exist & Expand International Labour market

Govt. should take many more steps to increase & expand labor market worldwide. Like malaysia we need to redirect the other Middle East countries like KSA, Dubai, Qatar.

A vast population are depending on remittance directly or indirectly come from outside the country. And the barriesrs in this ector should be controlled & monitored strictly. Besde this the foreign consulates outside the country may play avital role in this regard. But the fact is they are not doing there duties properly,

Even if any labor when face problem & reached to them they dont co-operate with the properly most of the time.
Our reserve also depend on it badly. So we should be caring on this.
